U.S. DOT Proposes Rule to Ban Hand-Held Cell Phone Use for Commercial Truck and Bus Drivers

U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed a new safety regulation that would ban interstate commercial truck and bus drivers from using hand-held cell phones while operating a commercial motor vehicle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rule  will fine drivers up to $2,750 for each offense and disqualification of their commercial driver’s license (CDL) for multiple offenses.  Motor carriers that allow their drivers to use hand-held cell phones while driving would face a maximum penalty of $11,000.
